United Head For Play Off's With A Blue Toon Win

Ayr will head for the the Second Division play-offs with a confidence-boosting victory over Peterhead.

With a less than impressive history at Balmoor Stadium, United nevertheless selected a second string team to face Peterhead knowing that a play off place for both clubs was already secured.

0-0 at half time, Ayr went 2-0 up early in the second half through David Gormley's ferocious shot from 17 yards in 51 minutes and Kenny Connolly's headed goal at the back post five minutes later.

Graeme Sharp rounded the goalkeeper to pull one back almost immediately for the home side and then levelled the score on 82 minutes with a glorious 20-yard strike.

But the United stuck to their task and took all three points with a superb free-kick from Scott Agnew five minutes from the end leaving Ayr in second place in the league.

United have now to take on third placed Brechin City in the play off's
