Doonhamers give themselves hope

Bottom club Queen of the South are just three points from safety following a crucial 2-1 home victory over fellow First Division strugglers Ayr.

The Doonhamers had won just one of their previous nine league games but took the lead after 14 minutes thanks to Allan Johnston's first goal since September, a low driven effort from the edge of the area.

Gus MacPherson's side doubled their lead 10 minutes later, Sam Parkin heading home his fourth goal of the season from close range.

The visitors came back into the match 12 minutes from time when Michael Moffat found the back of the net with a clinical finish.

But Brian Reid's men were unable to find a late equaliser and are now five games without a win and only one point from danger.
