Peterhead remain rooted to the bottom of the Third Division after a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Ayr.

Third-placed Ayr took the lead after 24 minutes when Alan Trouten latched onto a lofted Paul Willis corner to thump the ball in from just outside the box.

Then, after 68 minutes, Ayr looked to have sealed the victory when striker Michael Moffat raced onto a Mark Roberts through ball to slot home their second of the afternoon.

Struggling Peterhead were thrown a lifeline when, in the 81st minute, substitute Dennis Wyness was brought down inside the box by Ayr centre-back Ebbie Malone. Wyness picked himself up and kept his compsure to slot in the resulting penalty.

But the home side were unable to break down their high-flying opponents, and Ayr held on for the win.
