Ayr ended a 13-game run without a win to send promotion-chasing Morton crashing in a one-sided contest.

Furious Morton boss Jim McInally claimed he was ashamed of his players' performance and vowed to quit at the end of the season if they failed to win promotion.

Ayr dominated the first half and deservedly took the lead in the 40th minute when Paul Weaver thundered the ball into the roof of the net after a corner from Chris Strain was only half cleared.

Ayr doubled their lead after 66 minutes when Craig Conway sent in Kieran McAnespie, and the wing-back raced in to score from a tight angle.

Ayr sent on Gareth Wardlaw for the closing stages, and the substitute capped a brilliant performance with two goals in a five-minute burst. After 81 minutes he ran 40 yards and held off a series of challenges before squeezing home a low shot.

Then in the 86 minute the super sub struck again, coming between Kevin Finlayson and Ryan Harding to fire home Ayr's fourth.

It was almost 5-0, but a chip from Weaver beat keeper David McGurn only to bounce off the top of the bar.
