Both Ayr and Cowdenbeath went into this match on a bad run of form with the Fifers having no wins in their previous four matxhes. United had the 4-0 win over Berwick to raise their confidence.

It didnt take the Blue Brazil long to break the deadlock as Trialist Paul McQuade struck the opening goal after ten minutes. He picked up a defence splitting pass from John Dempster before sending a nicely judged curling effort past Ayr's Mark McGeown. It wasnt to be a good day for the Ayr keeper lasting only 33 minutes before being substituted by Fraser Stewart after picking up a back injury.

United, whose players had been forced to apologise after a previous drubbing at Brechin looked indecisive as Cowdenbeath controlled the game for long spells ensuring that Cowdenbeath led by that solitory goal at half time.

The second half went the same way and Cowdenbeath, missing six players from injury and suspension, nevertheless extended their lead after 76 minutes when John Dempster took the honours this time by netting the second goal after McQuade saw his initial effort blocked by Ayr;s substitute goalkeeper Stewart.

Ayr did make some effort to come back into the match and their best chance fell to top scorer Alex Williams who sent his shot over the bar late on.

The defeat for Ayr leaves them three points behind Cowdenbeath in second bottom place. Other results saw bottom club Berwick Rangers claw back a point on the honest men leaing an 8 point gap.
