Breakthrough For Ayr

An early strike by Kenneth Connolly was enough to give Ayr United victory over Raith Rovers at Somerset Park.

It was United's first league win of the season.

Connolly pounced on 12 minutes after goalkeeper David McGurn had failed to hold Ryan Stevenson's cross. Ayr were dominant in the first half as league leaders Raith failed to impress.

United almost extended their lead after the break when Kevin James headed against the crossbar and Chris Aitken shot the rebound just wide.

Ayr continued to press Rovers for a second clinching goal but it wouldnt come. In the dying minutes Cawley broke lose but failed to put the ball past the Raith keeper when a score seemed easier.

Seconds later the home faithfull had their hearts in their mouths when on-loan Dundee United striker Johnny Russell came close to levelling for Raith with a long-range chip.

However, Ayr held on for a morale boasting victory, a result which sees them move up two places to 7th in the league.
