Ayr claimed their first win of the season after been given a scare by Berwick.

The home side took control from the start and took the lead with only ten minutes played when Robert Burgess swept home from close range.

Darren Henderson drove just over the bar moments later as Ayr look to take control the game.

But it was Berwick who were next to threaten when Mark Cowan saw his header cleared off the line by Stuart McGrady.

Ayr doubled their lead just before the break with a fine move that saw Henderson set up Paddy Connolly to nudge home from seven yards.

The second half was played in second gear as Ayr settled for what they had and rarely looked like scoring again.

The nearest they came was a shout for a penalty after a foul on Connolly which was turned down by the referee.

Berwick almost staged a dramatic comeback when David Murie's shot was touched home by Gareth Hutchison.

Ayr hung on in the closing minutes for the deserved three points.
