Ayr United have bolstered their defence by signing a defender and a 'keeper.

Former Clyde defender Billy Gibson has come from the cash strapped Clyde on a free transfer to Somerset Park and will be a huge assett in the United defence.

The 28-year-old right back was one of 12 players who agreed to terminate their contracts at Broadwood to prevent the club going into administration.

Gibson started his career at Rangers before agreeing a move to Partick Thistle in 2004.

He moved to St Patrick's Athletic three years later before joining the Bully Wee in January 2008.

Former Kilmarnock, Ross County, Dundee and Hereford United goalkeeper Craig Samson has come to Ayr on a one-year deal.

The 25-year-old had his contract at Hereford terminated by mutual consent in April.

The last of 14 appearances he made for the Bulls was in January's 4-1 defeat at Stockport County.

An Ayrshire native, Samson began his career at Kilmarnock and moved to Dundee United before spending a season at County then Dundee.

Both players will be in the United squad who will play their first pre-season friendly in Austria today (11th July).
