Challenge Cup Trip to Hamilton

Last updated : 09 August 2007 By Honestman
United head for first Division Hamilton for a Challenge Cup match on Tuesday hopeful not to repeat the 5-0 drubbing by Livingston in the CIS Cup this week.

Victories at Douglas Park, Hamilton have not always been easy run of the mill events. Early results provided the home team with victories and a fair sprinkling of draws made up most of the rest.

The first ever match at Hamilton was on 13th September 1913 when United suffered a 4-0 defeat. t wasn't until 4th February 1916 that a 3-2 result gave Ayr their first win at Douglas Park. This was followed closely b a 3-0 win there on 5th January 1918.

There wee few further wins before the war for United.

Season 1950/51 saw Ayr's first post war win. A high scoring match was on 29th March 1958 when United won by 5-4.

Ayr United achieved a win on 7th December 1963 in a 2nd division match ending in a 4-2 win for Ayr.

United had a few good wins later in the 60's but few matches took place in the 70's

Season 1984/85 brought another good 4-1 victory for Ayr at Douglas Park with the programme for this match being an unusual open book cover design in a landscape format. The landscape format is a feature of Hamilton's home programmes during this era.

On 22nd October 1994 Ayr had another win, this time by 2-0, the match, however, played at Firhill Park, Glasgow.

Firhill was stlll the venue in 1998/99 when United produced a good 2-0 in the 2nd Division.

10th August 2004 was the only match at Hamilton since then with Accies winning the League Cup match by 4-1 .

United's home win by 5-0 on 19th December 1998 was a rare high win over Accies in a seris of results that have not favoured Ayr.

Current form would suggest that not much will change on Tuesday night.
