Barnsley were the newly crowned champions of the English Third divsion (north), when they travelled north to Somerset Park on 26th April 1939. The match was a benefit match for Ayr United's Jock Taylor who became a free agent after the match.

The score was a disappointing 2-1 defeat for Ayr.
